Spyglass Announces A New Line Of Internet Application Products December 3, 1996 As part of its comprehensive strategy to connect the masses to the World Wide Web, Spyglass has announced a line of Internet Application products to address the varying capabilities of Internet access devices. Spyglass' three-tiered product strategy was made public today in a related announcement as the central component of the company's accelerated push into the Web-device marketplace. Spyglass Internet Applications will enhance a wide variety of devices and are available to device manufacturers, Internet Service Providers (ISPs), phone companies, cable operators, software developers, network infrastructure providers, cellular providers and large corporations to provide collaboration capabilities via the Internet. The Internet applications are not end-user applications but software products that reside on either the server or client that provide a "gateway" for delivery of content in the most appropriate manner for a particular device. "Desktop-centric applications will not work in many of the new Internet access devices," said Randy Littleson, vice president of marketing. "While three percent of the world's population is using today's PC applications, Spyglass is looking ahead to the other 97 percent that will need device independent software applications to bring the wealth of information available on the web to consumers." Among the Internet Application products offered in Spyglass' product strategy are WebNotes Mail, WebNotes Conferencing and other applications: * WebNotes Mail - Functions as a gateway and infrastructure component to connect devices to existing Internet standards-based mail and groupware systems through Internet standards such as SMTP, MIME and POP3. Runs as a server application to offload computing resources from the device. In doing so, WebNotes Mail provides a customizable HTML interface and user mail database for a large number of users. Includes mail archiving and conferencing functionality to promote collaboration. * WebNotes Conferencing - High-performance server-based proxy client to Internet conferencing. Includes a completely customizable HTML user interface. Acting as a conferencing client proxy for multiple devices, the HTML-based user interface runs on the server and supports any Web browser while the server-based message database facilitates the management of information without requiring resources on a device. * Other Applications - Spyglass connectivity and infrastructure products create a platform for delivery of device independent Internet applications. These server-based solutions offload processing from resource constrained devices. Spyglass will emphasize collaboration applications on Internet connected devices through development, licensing, acquisition and/or partnering. Spyglass' device independent Internet Applications provide the essential link between Internet content and a wide variety of devices by delivering content in a way that promotes information exchange and collaboration across all access devices.
