Data General Corporation today announced that Oracle's WebServer 2.0 application platform is now available on CYBERSHIELD, a solution from Data General and BDM International that delivers the industry's highest level of protection for internet computing.
CYBERSHIELD enables enterprises to conduct business over the internet and internally via intranets on Data General's AViiON servers with confidence that security issues have been resolved. The CYBERSHIELD solution combines Data General's DG/UX B2 Security operating system and CYBERSHIELD Secure Internet Software (CSIS) from BDM International.
"Enterprises that want to conduct business using the internet need more protection than standard firewalls and data encryption can provide. They must have a secure server to insure that the greatest security threat -- intentional or accidental internal security breaches -- can be avoided," said David Ellenberger, vice president of Corporate Marketing at Data General.
"Our CYBERSHIELD solution, which combines containment technology with end-to-end authentication and encryption mechanisms, allows users to take full advantage of the internet and intranet without security concerns - it's a firewall, internet server, and intranet application platform, all in one," said Ellenberger.
Data General has already installed the CYBERSHIELD solution in customer sites. Among them is the headquarters of Standard Life, one of the United Kingdom's leading insurers. Standard Life is using CYBERSHIELD as its internet server, firewall and intranet server.
"An operating environment with the B2 level of trust is essential to implementing CYBERSHIELD's multilevel secure authentication and encryption capabilities," observed William Dawson, BDM vice president, Information Systems Security. "When you add an advanced server product such as Oracle's WebServer to that operating environment, the internet becomes a viable medium for the exchange of business data."
Dr. Thomas Hildebrand, vice president of the Intel/MIPS Products Division at Oracle, added, "We are excited to see Oracle's WebServer running on top of Data General's B2 level operating system with BDM International's CYBERSHIELD. We believe this combination will be a big winner for customers."
The Oracle WebServer, combined with the industry-leading Oracle7 database and its unique high performance, multi-threaded architecture, provides unmatched scalability and reliability. WebServer components include:
-- Web Request Broker, a high performance, multi-threaded, multi-processing application server that supports JAVA and the APIs for Microsoft's Internet Information Server and other web servers.
-- WebServer Software Developer's Kit, an open application development environment that delivers seamless integration with the Oracle7 database and the most popular web application development environments.
-- WebServer Management Tools, a portfolio of software tools enabling easy, HTML-based web server management.
The rich functionality of the Oracle WebServer and its security options combined with CYBERSHIELD enable a new class of web-based applications. In addition to secure commercial transactions, enterprises can use the integrated product package to control internal access to different areas of intranets or internet access to corporate data through a public web site.
For example, dynamic pages could be created on a company's intranet that would allow users to check 401K account balances based on stock values at the last close of the stock market and make fund choices directly from their browser without concern that their data could be viewed or altered by anyone.
Data General is the only vendor with a commercial UNIX implementation that is being evaluated by the National Computer Security Center for B2 level certification, the highest level of trust that can be awarded for a general purpose operating system.
The Oracle WebServer 2.0 is currently available with the CYBERSHIELD solution. Data General is marketing CYBERSHIELD as a packaged solution, including consulting and support services, with prices starting under $50,000.
