SAN FRANCISCO-Network Computer, Inc. (NCI) today announced that Oracle InterOffice (TM) will be the first shipping application designed for the NC. The NC will serve as a fully functioning client of the InterOffice (TM) server by taking advantage of its HTML (hypertext markup language) interface. InterOffice dynamically generates HTML pages of mail messages and other documents and presents them through the NC web browser. Because the application is network-centric, no software resides locally on the NC, thereby eliminating client administration and maintenance costs.
InterOffice provides a range of robust corporate applications including electronic mail, scheduling, workflow and document management that will enable full compatibility and interoperability between conventional personal computers and the NC.
"The communications and groupware capabilities of Oracle InterOffice together with the NC will empower a new class of users and facilitate the cooperation of PCs and NCs in corporations," said Jerry Baker, president of Network Computer, Inc. "The flexibility of the HTML interface, accessibility through the NC web browser and scalability makes it the software of choice for a network computing environment."
InterOffice on the NC will be available following the initial production rollout of the NC.
Network Computer, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oracle Corporation, will develop, license and market all necessary software and support services for the NC, including the newly announced Oracle NC System Software Suite and other NC applications.
