DCI Adds IBM Host Connectivity Components To NC Technology Licensed From HDS

January 21, 1997

Development Concepts, Incorporated (DCI) has licensed technology and hardware from HDS Network Systems (Nasdaq: HDSX), a leading supplier of network computers. The licensing agreement enables DCI to integrate its mainframe and midrange connectivity components into a new line of network computers based on HDS's @workStation platform.

HDS has shipped thousands of @workStations since it introduced the product into the X terminal market. "We've applied our expertise in enterprise systems connectivity to the network computer technology that has been embraced by thousands of companies worldwide," said DCI Director Gary Prowant. "HDS is known for its quality products. This agreement gives DCI the opportunity to build upon that reputation by delivering its NC called Visara, the next generation of network computers."

The base model can attach to the IBM AS/400, RS/6000, S/390, as well as Hewlett-Packard, Digital and other host computers through TCP/IP Ethernet connection. Visara can also access applications and data residing on a multi-user server, which enhances resource control while reducing administration training and support costs. The Web browser and Java Virtual Machine provide Visara with intranet and Internet capabilities.

The Visara NC allows the desktop user to run midrange, mainframe, Windows, UNIX and DOS applications. The device is scalable from a non-programmable terminal to a multimedia executive workstation and offers a Netscape-compatible Web browser and a Java Virtual Machine. Prices start at $698. DCI and a related company, Affinity Systems, will begin shipping Visara in February.

DCI markets worldwide to OEMs serving the IBM connectivity market. Affinity Systems sells its labeled products to end users, dealers, systems integrators and VARs.
