Comcast Selects CyberSURFR For First Six Launches

March 18, 1997

Motorola, Inc., Multimedia Group today announced that it has been selected by Comcast Corporation as the cable modem vendor for six of Comcast's @Home high speed Internet access service launches. All six deployments are expected to occur by the end of second quarter.

In the next few months, Comcast plans to launch @Home using Motorola's CyberSURFR cable modems in the greater Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania, greater Detroit area of Michigan, northern New Jersey and Orange County, Calif. Launches have already taken place in Sarasota, Fla., and Baltimore, Md.

"Building relationships with industry leaders like Comcast helps to strengthen our leadership in the broadband community," said Dick Day, corporate vice president, Motorola Multimedia Markets Division. "We're confident that our CyberSURFR cable modem will deliver the performance and quality that Comcast @Home requires for its launches."

Motorola recently announced upgraded features to the CyberSURFR cable modem system that will simplify the installation process for the upcoming launches. The new features include Auto Provisioning, which allows operators to install modems without having to manually enter information in the headend, and Internet Protocol Filtering, which allows cable operators to offer a new range of services such as premium content and telecommuting by assigning user specific access profiles.

"Motorola's CyberSURFR cable modem is performing well for us in Baltimore and Sarasota which makes us comfortable selecting Motorola for our next four launch markets," said Roger Keating, Vice President Online Services of Comcast Cable.

The CyberSURFR cable modem is part of Motorola's CableComm family of products. The CyberSURFR cable modem connects subscriber personal computers to the hybrid fiber coax (HFC) system via a 10Base-T 802.3 local area network connection specifically designed for on-line services, Internet access, telecommuting and other emerging services for home and business PC users. The modem offers throughput speeds of up to 10 Mbps in the downstream path and upstream data of up to 768 Kbps. The Motorola Cable Router is installed in the network headend, where it interfaces with the HFC distribution network to local or remote IP networks.

Comcast is principally engaged in the development, management and operation of wired telecommunications including cable television and telephone services; wireless telecommunications including cellular, personal communication services and direct-to-home satellite television; and content through principal ownership of QVC, the world's premier electronic retailer, and through majority ownership of Comcast-Spectator and other programming investments. The company's consolidated and affiliated operations serve over 10 million customers worldwide.
