Sun Microsystems Announces That Over 50% Of The Real-time Operating System Industry Has Licensed PersonalJava And EmbeddedJava September 25, 1997
Sun Microsystems Inc. announced today that leading real-time operating system (RTOS) vendors Acorn, Chorus, GeoWorks, Lucent Technologies, Microtec, Microware, QNX and WindRiver Systems have been licensed to integrate and sell the PersonalJava™ and EmbeddedJava™ platforms with their products to deliver complete, Java™-enabled embedded software solutions to their customers (Quotes and contact information from these endorsers are included below). These companies represent more than 50% of the total market for commercial real-time operating systems, software that allows consumer devices like set-top boxes, webphones and pagers to operate. In related news, Sun announced that it plans to post the final PersonalJava specification and a "style guide" for building PersonalJava applications next week. PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava are designed to complement an RTOS and to allow consumer devices to run Java programs and connect to any network. PersonalJava has been designed primarily for devices with sophisticated displays while EmbeddedJava has been designed for devices that have a character-based display or no display at all. "These agreements allow the PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava platforms to be delivered to tens of millions of devices -- that's a compelling volume opportunity for Java developers," said Alan Baratz, president of the JavaSoft division of Sun Microsystems. "Because Java provides the genetic code that ensures developers can write applications once that will run anywhere, anything with a microprocessor becomes a business opportunity for Java developers." Sun has granted each RTOS vendor a license to resell PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava binary code with their platforms to their customers, the device manufacturers. This will enable the RTOS vendors to offer a complete software solution to their customers. These agreements come at a time when whole segments of the consumer electronics industry are standardizing on PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava. Last month, leading telecommunications providers Alcatel, Nortel and Samsung announced that they are incorporating PersonalJava into their new webphone products. Alcatel, Nortel and Samsung combined represent more than an estimated $110 billion in the telecommunications and consumer technology industry annually, and represent the majority of the new webphone market. "We fully expect industries to continue standardizing on PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava," continued Baratz. "What Sun and its RTOS allies are doing is making it easy for manufacturers to leverage their development and get products to market quickly." PersonalJava specification completed Sun also announced today that it plans to post the final PersonalJava specification at http://java.sun.com/products/personaljava next week. The public review period was just completed. With the PersonalJava specification, Sun will release a style guide for building PersonalJava applications. A second style guide for building PersonalJava-enabled devices will be available later this year. The style guide will also be posted at http://java.sun.com/products/personaljava . PersonalJava is designed specifically for network-connectable products people use in homes, while mobile or in the office. These devices have displays but might not include a keyboard or a mouse. Since it was posted on July 2, there have been more than 10,000 downloads of the PersonalJava specification. EmbeddedJava, designed to run on a wide variety of high volume microprocessors, serves manufacturers who want to leverage Java benefits in devices with limited displays, such as instrumentation, low-end mobile phones, pagers, factory automation equipment, fax machines, and network routers/switches.
