Sun Microsystems Implements Security Technology For Java Development Kit From Cylink Corporation September 4, 1997
Cylink Corporation (NASDAQ:CYLK), a leading provider of information security solutions since 1984, today announced that Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) has implemented Cylink's X.509 certificate technology for inclusion in the upcoming release of the Java™ Development Kit (JDK). Included in the Sun solution is a set of foundation classes that process industry standard X.509 version 3 digital certificates. Cylink's technology provides the JDK with an increased level of Java security for building mission-critical business applications in Java. With the addition of X.509 functionality in the JDK, all Java developers will have a more robust, proven and flexible security system. This allows Java developers to build applications with strong authentication such as e-commerce and personnel information applications. X.509 version 3 certificates have been standardized by ANSI, ISO/ITU, and are being considered for standardization by the IETF. The X.509 standard has also been implemented by e-commerce and software tool vendors to create interoperability of secure transaction handling systems. With the implementation of X.509 certificates in the JDK, builders and users of Java applications will have access to an authentication system that is as platform independent and as interoperable as Java itself. "The agreement we've entered into with JavaSoft will allow people and systems all over the world to have reliable security for any range of applications," said Fernand B. Sarrat, president and CEO of Cylink. "This work allows us to showcase the strong technological skill at Cylink while helping a great partner -- JavaSoft." "The inclusion of X.509 processing technology from Cylink creates the foundation for a proven and comprehensive security system for Java developers and customers," said David Spenhoff, Director of Product Marketing at Sun Microsystems/JavaSoft Division. "Cylink's reputation in the security market and the strength of the code we've licensed from them makes Cylink the best independent organization to help us build better security into Java."
