Sun Microsystems Licenses i-Planet's PonyEspresso™ Java-based Email Client As Part Of Sun's Mobile, Internet Computing Solution for Sun Employees September 22, 1997
i-Planet, Inc. today announced that Sun Microsystems has licensed for internal use by its employees i-Planet's Java(TM)-based, IMAP4 compliant, secure email software, PonyEspresso. i-Planet's PonyEspresso will be used by Sun's mobile workforce to enable Internet email access from any secure Java-enabled browser to Sun's corporate email. "The synergy of i-Planet's PonyEspresso mail applet with Sun's IMAP4-compliant, high performance Internet mail server product has enabled us to offer to our employees secure, safe, reliable Internet email access from anywhere in the world," said Pat Deagman, vice president of Enterprise Network Services at Sun Microsystems. "We selected i-Planet's email applet because of its effective Internet design, performance, interoperability, as well as being 100% Pure Java." Benefits to Sun The adoption of i-Planet's email applet, PonyEspresso, in Sun's Internet mail product and intranet and Internet design will virtually eliminate secure, remote access complexity, and is aligned with Sun's Java webtop strategy. "From anyone's computer in the world connected to the Internet with a Java-enabled, SSL supported browser, along with digital token technology, Sun employees will now have access to their email using the IMAP4 protocol which uses modest amounts of bandwidth making low speed access fast and high speed access have extraordinarily high network performance," points out Terry Keeley, vice president and chief engineer of Sun's Information Resources group. Mochila™ Technology Enhances Internet Access Security The Mochila technology in PonyEspresso simplifies the complex task of maintaining security while allowing remote users to access the corporate network. Without implementing tunneling software, Mochila leverages Netscape Communication's de facto standard secure socket layer (SSL) to allow email to securely and transparently pass through the Web server. "We feel PonyEspresso will revolutionize the way corporations implement their email solutions for remote users," said Kevin Kalajan, director of product strategy at i-Planet.
