Borland Demonstrates Support For Oracle Platform At Oracle OpenWorld '97; Free Preview Of Borland DataGateway Is Now Available September 24, 1997
As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting the Oracle database platform, Borland International, Inc. (Nasdaq: BORL) will demonstrate how its new Borland DataGateway for Java product allows developers to easily build Java applications accessing Oracle data. Borland will demonstrate DataGateway for Java and its new JBuilder pure Java visual development tool at Oracle OpenWorld '97 (Booth #752), being held at the Los Angeles Convention Center this week. In addition to technology demonstrations, Borland will also give several technical presentations covering Java database application development. "A recent Borland survey of Java developers indicated that over 80 percent plan to build Java applications that access corporate databases, and of these developers, Oracle is by far the most popular," said Zack Urlocker, vice president of product management, Borland International. "Providing access to all major corporate data sources is central to Borland's strategy to deliver tools and technologies to help customers build corporate information networks (Infonets) for analyzing information and applications across the enterprise." Borland Product Demonstrations Borland last week announced Borland DataGateway for Java, a database connectivity middleware solution providing 100% Pure Java client access to corporate databases through industry-standard JDBC interfaces. Borland DataGateway is designed to provide high-performance JDBC database access using native drivers on a middle-tier to corporate information residing on Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Microsoft SQL Server, DB2, and InterBase servers, desktop databases and ODBC data sources. Borland DataGateway will be available later this year in JBuilder Client/Server Suite, and as a stand-alone solution for any JDBC-compliant Java application. A free preview developer version of Borland DataGateway is now available from Borland Online, the company's website at http://www.borland.com/datagateway/ . Borland announced the shipment and immediate availability of JBuilder Professional and JBuilder Standard last week, the first products in the company's new line of visual development tools for Sun Microsystems' Java™ programming language. Borland JBuilder is a family of highly-productive, visual development tools for creating high-performance, platform-independent applications using the Java programming language. JBuilder's scalable, component-based environment is designed for all levels of corporate information network or "Infonet" development projects ranging from applets and applications that require networked database connectivity to client/server and enterprise-wide, distributed multi-tier systems. The JBuilder product family features the industry's fastest and easiest JavaBean component creation, a scalable database architecture, robust visual development tools, and the ability to produce "100% Pure Java" platform-independent applications, applets and JavaBeans. JBuilder Client/Server Suite, a higher-end version for building enterprise-scale business applications with Java, is scheduled for availability later this year. Oracle Support for Borland JBuilder Earlier this year, Borland Oracle announced that Oracle will license Borland's Java-related technology for use with Oracle database systems and application development tools. Under the terms of the license agreement, Oracle plans to integrate and distribute Borland JBuilder(TM) software with a number of Oracle's existing and future products. The license between the two companies is a worldwide, non-exclusive agreement. The Oracle-Borland agreement is aimed at extending the tools available to Oracle customers for their Internet and intranet application development. As part of the license agreement, Borland and Oracle have agreed that their development teams will work together to promote integration and compatibility between technologies. Borland Java Development Sessions As part of its Oracle OpenWorld Activities, Borland will host two technical sessions focused on Java development. The first session, "JBuilder Technical Tour," will be held Wednesday, September 24 at 3:30 p.m. in room 403a. This presentation will provide Oracle users with an overview of Borland's new pure Java development tool. The second presentation, which will be held Thursday, September 25, at 3:30 p.m. in 408b, is titled "Building Client/Server Applications with JBuilder/DataExpress." The talk will cover important design and usage aspects of JBuilder components needed to build client/server applications. The sessions will hosted by two of Borland's leading Java development experts. About Borland International, Inc.
