Software Vendors Unite With Integrator To Provide A Customizable Internet Architecture Around Java

August 29, 1997

Addressing the financial service industry's needs for advanced Java™ solutions to build trading and portfolio management applications, Random Walk Computing, Wall Street's premium Java development and integration boutique, has arranged technology transfers that will lower the barriers to customers looking to leverage the power of Java and the Internet. ILOG, a leading provider of advanced software components for optimization; Open Horizon, a leader in the Internet communications software market; and DataChannel, the leader in enterprise webcasting software, have all entered into partnership arrangements with Random Walk to create an architecture incorporating real-time data, robust security, web-based distribution, entitlements, and a user-friendly presentation interface run through a browser. This architecture will effectively serve as a template for implementing large distributed systems in combination with legacy database technologies and existing hardware platforms. The customer will therefore reap the benefits of a product solution: focused functionality, lowered cost, and extensive support, with the flexibility and process-specific benefits of a custom solution.

Through these partnerships, Random Walk has become intimate with each technology and the issues involved with integrating and deploying them. Using ILOG products, Random Walk models business logic and creates the mission-critical business applications that work with legacy systems, data feeds and database technology. On the front-end, a customizable Java thin client, with built-in entitlements management, is presented to the user via DataChannel's ChannelManagerFM. The secure interaction necessary for Internet deployment between the client and the back-end applications will then be handled by Open Horizon's Ambrosia product. Each technology is specialized to handle a particular function: business logic, communication and client presentation.

"There is no need to reinvent the wheel on a T&M basis when we can recommend a less expensive third party solution we feel comfortable endorsing," says Eric Lehrfeld, Director of Business Development at Random Walk. "In doing so, and in working closely with our partners, we are able to develop and provide architectural templates that we can rapidly deploy in a way appropriate for the business case."

"We are very excited about our new alliance with Random Walk," said David Taber, VP of Marketing at ILOG. "Random Walk's Java expertise on Wall Street with ILOG's C++ and Java software components make a powerful combination for developing mission-critical applications such as real time trading applications, portfolio optimization, or transaction management systems. Our rule engine, ILOG Rules, and our 2D graphics library, ILOG Views, are very powerful and robust, and provide the sophisticated features required for financial companies' development needs."

"Working with Random Walk and other partners enables us to provide a complete business solution," says Open Horizon president and CEO Bruce Coleman. "Our contribution helps customers move from the requirements phase to the implementation phase of a project more quickly. Our Ambrosia product serves as a ready-made foundation to support development of mission-critical Java applications and enables easy integration with legacy applications. Ambrosia delivers real-time event notification via a secure, reliable infrastructure based on a publish/subscribe messaging engine. The product provides interfaces for 100% Pure Java, C/C++, and CORBA, comprehensive security, guaranteed delivery, transaction support, and centralized administration."

"Wall Street firms are under increasing competitive pressure to shorten development time on new products and provide timely information," said Lisa Thorell, DataChannel's VP of Marketing. "ChannelManagerFM allows a firm to create customized interfaces for their customers while also unifying the often disparate information sources found in financial service firms. Our partnership with Random Walk provides financial service firms with the Java systems integration expertise to gain competitive advantage."

"We are very glad to see these innovative companies building around Java in creating this partnership with Random Walk," said Dr. Lew Tucker, director of corporate and ISV relations for Sun Microsystems' JavaSoft business unit. "Java customers can now find an easier solution for their distributed computing needs through this integration."
