Tektronix, Inc. First To Launch Business Network Computer With True, Full-Motion Video

July 17, 1997

Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE: TEK), ranked #1 in worldwide shipments of network computers*, today introduced their new NC200 Series Business Network Computers. Tektronix NC200 Series Business Network Computers provide full, low cost access to any data -- including full-motion video -- on any host, anywhere on the enterprise network. Exceeding the Network Computer Reference Profile, this new family of business network computers comes standard with a local Navio NC Navigator browser and a Java interpreter and optionally supports MPEG-1 digital video and 100Base-TX.

The NC200 Series are the first network computers to deliver true, full-motion digital video with simultaneous windowed access to the local NC Navigator browser, Java, and legacy applications running on major systems. These systems include IBM mainframes and DEC mini-computers, open systems applications on workstations/servers, and PC applications through Tektronix, Inc.'s award-winning WinDD(TM) software. Not only is the Tektronix NC200 Series the best overall network computer solution to today's heterogeneous environment, it's also the best enterprise solution for future expandability.

"We are seeing customers deploying faster networks and using more and more browser and Java applications," said Lee Rainey, Program Director, Video and Networking Division's Video Data Services. "We've built performance into our products now to accommodate the substantial performance requirements that will be demanded later."

In addition to protecting the customer's investment by providing products with five-to-seven year life cycles, the cost of owning and operating the Tektronix NC200 Series Business Network Computers is 60-75% less than the cost of owning and operating networked PCs.

"Tektronix NC200 Series Business Network Computers are for organizations looking for a low-risk transition to thin-client technology," continued Rainey. "We are the only company in the world that is a leader in both video and networking -- the two areas transforming the face of business communications -- and we have years of experience in delivering desktop devices for mission-critical business applications."

Recognizing the increased customer demand for video in the next generation of mission-critical applications, Tektronix recently announced the first standards-based, complete solution for delivering superior quality, full-motion digital video over existing computer networks. Called the Spotlight(TM) Network VideoServer System, this solution includes a video server, a real-time MPEG Tektronix VideoEncoder and a Tektronix VideoBrowser plug-in for PCs and Tektronix Business Network Computers. This solution, designed for customers requiring more than just a video player on the desktop, provides bandwidth management for network transmission, successfully meeting the challenges of delivering video over corporate LANs.

The Tektronix NC200 Series is a complete family of business network computer products. The family includes logic only units, such as the NC200E for $795 and the NC200H which supports a higher screen resolution, increased expandability, and optional digital video. The NC200 Series Business Network Computers that include monitors start at $1,495.
