Windows Support Currently Ranks High in Influencing Network Computer Purchases

May 6, 1997

A national survey of IT decision makers commissioned by Boundless Technologies, a leading manufacturer of network computing access devices and software, reveals 54 percent think Java support would influence their decision to purchase network computers.

However, of the same group surveyed, only 7 percent currently have Java projects underway. Important to note is that the survey reports an even greater number - 84 percent - say Windows support would influence their network computer purchasing decisions. The survey was conducted by independent industry research firm Computer Intelligence (CI).

"Java is being viewed as the `killer app' that will drive network computer sales," said Michael Stebel, vice president of global marketing for Boundless. "But what is even more apparent is that network computers need to support Windows."

Stebel added that "With Java applications still widely unavailable, some companies are taking a `wait and see' attitude about purchasing network computers - especially since industry experts contend Java may require a `fatter' computing device than the current network computer model dictates. What companies need are network computers that will deliver access to Windows applications today and allow them to begin taking advantage of the benefits of network-centric computing, without fear of technical obsolescence once Java evolves from development to deliverable applications."

Boundless Technologies is preparing to launch its line of next-generation network computers that will answer this problem of technical obsolescence, achievable via unique, upgradable software modules that create a migration path across the continuum of computing environments. For example, with the same network computer device, companies can move from terminal-like access to legacy applications, to Windows and the Internet, as well as to Java applications of the near future - without risking their initial network computer hardware investment.

"The Computer Intelligence survey results confirm our strategy of delivering multi-user access to Windows, the most popular computing platform for business," said Bob James, president and CEO of Boundless. "The ability to expand our next-generation network computers to higher performance levels and additional computing platforms means users aren't locked into the functionality they purchase today. We believe the release of our next-generation line will provide the best investment protection and flexibility currently available in a network-centric computing device."

Boundless Technologies, a subsidiary of SunRiver Corporation (NASDAQ:SRVC), is a world leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of terminals and network computers for the Windows environment and the Internet/Intranet, legacy and UNIX applications markets. The Company's family of network computers provides "thin-client" computing solutions with PC capabilities where applications reside on a server and are accessed by users on demand. Without the need for large disk and memory capacities, all models offer significant administrative and total-cost-of-ownership advantages over networked PCs. The Company's products are distributed worldwide through a network of OEMs, distributors and value-added resellers.
