Curtis Mathes Exhibits First Televisions With Internal Set-top Box At Spring Comdex
June 3, 1997
Curtis Mathes Holding Corp. (Nasdaq:CRTM) announced today
that it has taken the new product category, uniView™, a step further with
the introduction of the first large screen televisions with internal set
top box. The uniView product line enables the consumer to access the Internet,
initiate and accept phone calls, send and receive faxes and e-mails and
monitor viewing by content.
The uniView DV 360, the 36 inch direct view television,
and uniView PT 550, the 55 inch rear projection television, are being demonstrated
along with the uniView 210 set top box at Booth #5043 at Spring COMDEX,
June 2-5, in Atlanta.
Both the uniView DV 360 and uniView PT 550 integrate premier
television features with telephony features to deliver an unprecedented
array of entertainment, information and communication. UniView DV 360 features
dual tuners with picture-in-picture, 600 lines of horizontal resolution,
full duplex speaker phone and digital line comb filter.
With the uniView PT 550, the consumer will experience
24 percent clearer images at the edge of the screen through high performance
optical lenses and a more concentrated projection beam and brighter, better
focus through the high resolution phosphor CRT. Other features of the 55
inch television include vertical contour control, 1,000 lines of horizontal
resolution, and full duplex speaker phone.
"Incorporating the set top box into the television
gives the consumer options," said Patrick A. Custer, chairman and
chief executive officer of Curtis Mathes. "They can purchase the box
to expand their current television capabilities or they may choose to buy
a new high-end, all-in-one television eliminating the need for an additional
box. Either way, they are able to screen calls with caller ID, answer the
phone, send e-mails, and surf the Internet without leaving and comfort
of the couch."
The announcement of uniView DV 360 and PT 550 builds on
the May launch of uniView 210 set top box. Whether a set top box or the
large screen TVs, uniView's easy-to-use technology leapfrogs the web-only
offerings of the competition. With uniView, users can not only surf the
net, but also talk on the phone, send and receive faxes and e-mails, access
TV program guides and parental control features, and program their VCRs.
Another unmatched feature is the unit's printer port for printing Internet
searches, faxes and e-mails. And, home shopping just became easier via
a credit card reader that, with one swipe, automatically sends encrypted
credit card information for purchases. The Curtis Mathes Xpressway(TM)
serves as the company's proprietary, nationwide on-line delivery system.
On May 13, Curtis Mathes announced the first in a series
of retail agreements for the uniView 210 model with Miami-based BrandsMart,
Dallas-based Communication Expo and San Jose-based Fry's. "We will
evaluate the distribution channels for uniView DV 360 and PT 550 as carefully
as we did for uniView 210. Consumer education, including hands-on demonstration
kiosks on the floor of each store, will be key to the success of all uniView
models," Custer said.
Curtis Mathes has established an advanced standard for
connectivity to Internet appliances by adopting leading technology from
Sun Microsystems, Inc., MCI Telecommunications Corp., and Cisco Systems,
Inc. It also has developed proprietary software enabling users to access
the unique features of uniView. Curtis Mathes is a Dallas-based electronic
engineering design and marketing company. The company also specializes
in advanced televisions, large electronic display systems, as well as other
new technologies.
