Novell Switches To Java For Management Software

May 9, 1997

Network software maker Novell [NASDAQ:NOVL] has introduced its new range of management software, written in Java, for easier and more convenient network maintenance. Code-named Houston, it will feature all of Novell's current management and administration tools, including ManageWise, and NetWare Administrator.

Houston will accomplish three main goals. First, administrators will be able to manage their networks from any Web browser or Java-enabled computer. Secondly, Houston accommodates a distributed model of network management, which should be beneficial to network managers whose work continues to multiply as Internet usage in the office grows.

With Houston, network administrators will be able to delegate management responsibilities to individuals within their network without having to grant them access to all other management tools, thus preserving network security. And finally, for developers, it will be very easy to integrate applications and components written as Java Beans, Novell claims.

Corporate computer systems are moving towards a network environment, and Java language is very compatible with networks as it can run on any type of computer.

Novell develops software for networks that connect the servers to the computers.

Java is a programming language for creating applications for any type of computer. Java applications can reside on a network server, and users can download them when needed.

This product will be available in late 1997. More information can be found at http://developer.novell.com .
