Sweden's Ericsson Moves Into Internet Business May 23, 1997
Ericsson has announced a major push into the world of the Internet and intranets. To support this, the telco has created a CyberLab research and development center to develop Internet and intranet systems. According to a spokesperson for the company, the center is actually a collaborative effort among Ericsson and its customers, vendors, and strategic partners, all of whom will benefit by gaining early access to emerging technologies. To be known as the CyberLab Hotel, the center will house subject matter experts from Ericsson and its customers and strategic partners who can "check in" to work on different technical platforms that are close to their core businesses. Through CyberLab, Ericsson claims it will target the computer industry (for network computer applications), the information providers (for push and multicasting applications), and the network operators (for access and transport). The Cyberlab Hotel will be based in Menlo Park, California, and is headed up by Elbert Ashbaugh, the executive director of the Ericsson Internet Center. The project is a joint operation between the company's six US divisions and its Swedish operation. Source: Newsbytes |
