Spyglass and Thomson Consumer Electronics Enter Licensing, Professional Services Agreement May 20, 1997
Spyglass Inc. (Nasdaq: SPYG) today announced it has signed a licensing and professional services agreement with Thomson Consumer Electronics Inc., Indianapolis, the largest manufacturer of television receivers and related video products in the United States under the RCA, GE and ProScan brands. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Spyglass Web client technology will be used in an electronic programming guide (EPG), provided as part of the NetChannel personalized Internet service included in Thomson's RCA-brand Network Computer/Consumer product. Viewers will now have a single interface that seamlessly combines broadcast programming with related Web-based content. "This is a terrific example of a customer selecting our products and services because we can provide the embedded Web software development expertise," said Doug Colbeth, president and CEO of Spyglass. "We add value to Thomson's innovative solution because we can deliver the technology and expertise necessary to help them deliver their product on time." The RCA set- top box is scheduled to be available this summer. "We chose Spyglass because of their expertise in developing software for devices," said Louis E. Lenzi, vice president, multimedia products and services for Thomson. "Their customer list is impressive and they've proven they can deliver quality technology and Internet experience. That's what we need for this important new consumer electronics product."
