Digital Demonstrates Next Generation Network Computing Solutions at NetWorld+Interop '97 May 7, 1997
At the NetWorld+Interop exhibition this week, Digital Equipment Corporation (NYSE: DEC) is showing organizations how its networked computing solutions and Internet expertise can help them meet today's complex business and technology challenges. To cover the full range of its networked offerings, Digital is hosting three booths and participating in several multivendor showcases. Next Generation Solutions on Display Today Under the banner "Driving the Future of Networked Business Solutions," Digital's Network Product Business, Booth 5041, is demonstrating next generation networking solutions in its "cool room" -- including IP switching, the network computer platform, IPv6 and "smart building" networking solutions. Digital's recently announced MultiSwitch 600/300 family of workgroup and departmental switches is also on display. In separate announcements Digital today announced new Gigabit Ethernet solutions, ISDN extensions to its RouteAbout family of products and a new ATM adapter supporting IP Switching and LAN emulation. AltaVista Introduces Next Generation of Intranet Search Software AltaVista Internet Software, a subsidiary of Digital, is announcing and demonstrating in Booth 5042, the next versions of AltaVista Search Intranet Extensions 97 which index corporate intranets and the Internet. The fastest and most scalable search software available today offers a number of new enhancements including support for new office applications and operating platforms. Meanwhile, AltaVista Forum has been nominated by Network Computing in the "Best Collaborative Software" category for the 1997 N+I Well-Connected Awards. AltaVista Forum competes with Domino 4.15 Server powered by Notes and Netscape SuiteSpot. The winner will be announced at a ceremony at N+I on May 6, 1997. Digital Worldwide Services Shows Strength and Flexibility Demonstrations from Digital's Worldwide Services, Booth 3617, show the lifecycle services available for planning, designing, implementing, maintaining and managing multivendor systems, applications and networks. Specifically, the demonstrations will include a tour of the Internet, Windows NT, Microsoft Exchange, remote system and network management, real-time consulting and partner solutions. As evidence to the flexibility of Digital Worldwide Services, the partner solutions includes participation from Digital's Network Product Business unit, Cisco Systems, 3Com, Microsoft and Computer Associates. Digital will release the findings of a report completed by Technology Managers Forum International on the "Real Cost of Networked Computing." Copies of the report can be obtained at the booth. Well-Managed, Highly-Available PC Client/Server Solutions Also at the show, Digital will showcase its strengths in highly available and manageable client/server solutions with a demonstration of remote clusters management over a network. In Digital's booth 5041, a pair of Prioris ZX servers running Microsoft Internet Information Server and SQL Server will be clustered using the latest Digital Clusters for Windows NT version 1.1. The clustered systems will be linked by a local area network to a Digital Celebris desktop PC in the Microsoft Clustering Partners Pavilion on the other side of N+I. The Digital client in the Microsoft Pavilion will act as a ServerWORKs management station to proactively monitor the clustered system in Digital's booth. ServerWORKs, which is bundled with all Digital Prioris and AlphaServer systems, provides remote alarming, management and diagnostic capabilities - enabling system administrators to take preventative measures before a mission- critical problem occurs. Digital Semiconductor Features Better Network Performance Connectivity products enabling cost-effective upgrades and high-speed networks highlight the Digital Semiconductor exhibit, Booth 4735. In network repeater applications, the new 21340 10/100Mbps buffered port switch eliminates Fast Ethernet topology restrictions and cuts the cost of speed upgrades by acting as a drop-in replacement for all 10Mbps repeaters. The four-port buffered design raises network throughput and increases bandwidth to an aggregate 400Mbps. The 21143 PCI/Cardbus Ethernet controller chip powers a demonstration of superior performance on a networked laptop system running a high-bandwidth, high-resolution video. Viewers can observe first-hand the higher resolution and superior motion characteristics of the Cardbus- transmitted signal. Digital Furthers Relationship With Internet Service Providers (ISPs) Digital's ISP business, which supports both UNIX and NT, is well on target to grow its worldwide market share from 14 to 20% over the next 18 months. The company plans to announce several customer wins at the show including agreements with MindSpring Enterprises, Kenan Systems, Software.com and AimQuest. As the ISP market matures, dial-in and commercial customers are now demanding higher levels and new types of services from their ISPs. Digital is responding by focusing its ISP business on several key areas, including providing technical assessment and scalability reviews for growing ISPs and delivering platforms for new value-added services -- such as fax-back, roaming, Internet telephony and NT installations of Microsoft's Commercial Internet System (MCIS). Digital Equipment Corporation is a world leader in open client/server solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information systems. Digital's scalable Alpha and Intel platforms, storage, networking, software and services, together with industry-focused solutions from business partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global marketplace.
