DOT Matrix To Build 'New Generation' Of Net-based Consumer Appliances Around Diba Software

May 30, 1997

DOT Matrix Limited, the Cambridge-based developer of DOT network-oriented computers, and Diba, Inc., a leading software technology provider for the 'Information Appliance' market, have announced a joint development partnership. Under the terms of the agreement, DOT Matrix will use Diba's open software suite as the foundation for its DOT device, a next generation, multi-purpose consumer Internet terminal. The terminal will be targeted at Information Providers worldwide - including telecommunications equipment companies and Internet Service Providers - who will bring DOT to global consumer markets. The terminals, based on the Diba Information Appliance Suite, will offer consumers low-cost, easy-to-use Internet access, including web-enabled television, email and videophone facilities, via standard TVs.

The first DOT terminals based on Diba's software will be available to Information Providers in the third quarter of 1997. A key aspect of the agreement is Diba's software support for DOT's in-built Smart Card reader, giving Information Providers and retailers potential access to electronic cash- enabled DOT devices in millions of homes. This, say the companies, provides the key to volume take-up of the product, as easy-to-use, secure payments over the Internet will allow for a broad range of chargeable goods and services, including micropayments.

"We have been incredibly impressed with DOT," said Nigel Seed, Vice President of European Operations for Diba, Inc. "The system's innovative design takes advantage of Motorola's soft modem technology, making network connection easier and cheaper, and providing off-the-shelf PTT approval in many countries. This, allied with DOT's in-built Smart Card functionality, will allow for fast implementation, and provide widespread take-up by the key players in this market: the Information Providers."

"This agreement signals the opening of enormous opportunity for the Internet industry worldwide, and a significant advance for the UK and European markets," said Martyn Gilbert, Managing Director of DOT Matrix. "Diba's powerful software platform combined with the functionality of DOT delivers a solution unprecedented in the marketplace. Both Diba and DOT Matrix recognise the tremendous market potential for Smart Card-enabled Information Appliances."
