Websurfer Internet TV Set-top Box To Feature Netscape's HTML Based Mail

October 30, 1997

WebSurfer Wednesday announced that it has entered into an agreement with Netscape Communications Corp. to integrate Web-based E-mail into the WebSurfer Internet set-top box -- accessible anywhere in the world -- using Netscape Messenger Express.

WebSurfer is an affordable hardware solution that provides hassle-free Internet access and boasts a multitude of server side applications.

WebSurfer provides consumers with the freedom to Surf the Web, transmit and remotely access electronic mail through Netscape Messenger Express, develop personal Web pages and compose and print word processing documents. WebSurfer combines entertainment and information in a "plug-and-play" environment utilizing a standard television and telephone line and is enhanced by a customized HTML 3.2 compliant browser. Every WebSurfer TV set-top box comes complete with a wireless keyboard and infrared remote control, at no extra charge.

"The flexibility of open standards and cross-platform products such as Netscape Messenger Express opens many doors. We are also pleased with the scalability of Netscape Messaging Server and Netscape Directory Server which make it possible for WebSurfer to service thousands of Internet users," said Paul Batra, president of WebSurfer. "Not only will our clients enjoy the advantages of a user-friendly and rich E-mail system through Netscape Messenger Express, but the functionality of the central servers we have installed will also indirectly benefit our customers. The end result is high-quality and rapid service for our ever-expanding customer base."

"Netscape has a clear vision and powerful products which will enable WebSurfer to build a global Internet and messaging backbone that provides Internet services to individuals on their conventional television sets," said Ben Horowitz, director of Product Marketing at Netscape Communications Corp. "Netscape and WebSurfer are providing customers with Web-based mailboxes available anywhere in the world." Netscape Messaging Server-Hosting Edition is an open standards-based messaging system that provides superior scalability, performance and administration for telcos and large companies hosting millions of consumers and enterprise mailboxes. Netscape Messenger Express provides WebSurfer users with roaming access to quick, basic E-mail services. It enables rich HTML messages with hypertext links, and includes folders for mail management, sorting and searching. With Netscape Messenger Express, a user's E-mail resides on a server until it is needed. Since Netscape Messenger Express uses the Web to access E-mail, corporations can provide users the ability to download, read and send E-mail from remote locations on the network.
