PageGate Paging Engine Enables A Variety Of
Options Including Paging From E-mail, and Paging From Web Sites
October 7, 1997
PageGate has announced
a networkable paging engine that runs on Windows 95 and NT systems. The
PageGate engine will support a variety of network operating systems.
Currently, available front-ends include: a commandline/
ascii file interface, a GUI windows client, a CGI web server interface,
an email interface, and a teletype (TTY/TDD) interface.
PageGate
Paging Engine
The paging engine takes input from any of the front-end
modules and sends the messages to paging service providers via modem. Any
number of the front-end modules can be used simultaneously. User licenses
are required for the number of pagers set up in the paging engine, but
there is no limit to the number of pagers or service providers supported.
The engine can run on an existing file or web server, or can be run on
a separate workstation or server.
Front-end Modules:
- Commandline / Ascii File Front-end - Messages
are sent to the PageGate Paging Engine via a single command issued at the
DOS prompt. Commandline comands may also be issued from within windows
or from within many 'canned' and custom applications. In addition, this
front-end can scan a predetermined directory (networked or local) for text
files (ascii files) containing messages to be sent to the paging engine.
This is an excellent front-end used by itself, or used as a tool for developers
and system integrators to allow paging from within applications. For example,
network monitoring software could send a page to an administrator if an
anomaly is detected within existing systems.
- Windows Client (NotePager Net) - The windows client
runs under Windows 3.x, 95 or NT. It allows networked stations to send
pages to the PageGate Paging Engine via a graphical user interface.
- Web Server Interface - This front-end allows individuals
to send pages via personal websites. This interface uses a CGI script to
allow a web server to take information entered on a web page and send it
to the PageGate Paging Engine. The web server must be running locally.
(It will not work with virtually hosted websites.)
- Email Inteface - The email front-end takes incoming
email and sends a copy to the PageGate Paging Engine, and ultimately to
an alphanumeric pager. Notification of newly received email may also be
sent to numeric pagers. The mail messages can also be forwarded to an additional
email account. This front-end includes a fully functional mail server and
may be used by itself or in conjuction with existing mail servers.
Additional Dialer Engine
For high volume applications, additional dialer engines
can be installed. This will allow the PageGate Paging Engine to simultaneously
dial out to more than one carrier at a time, or to make multiple connections
to the same carrier.

limited free trial at http://www.notepage.com/downpage.htm
