Novasoft Ships Industry`s First Fully Java-Based Integrated Document & Workflow System

October 15, 1997

NovaSoft Systems, Inc., a leader in integrated document and workflow management solutions, today announced the shipment of NovaWeb/Approve, the industry's first fully Java-based, integrated document and workflow management system for business-critical applications.

NovaWeb/Approve, the first deliverable in the new NovaWeb family, enters the market on schedule with the comprehensive features, usability, adaptability and sustainability that are essential to optimize the ongoing use of organizational knowledge. The first product in it's market to leverage the power of Java, NovaWeb/Approve enables organizations to cost-effectively and dynamically build, administer and support diverse globally-distributed enterprises, reaffirming NovaSoft's continued leadership in delivering powerful, readily deployable solutions.

"With the release of NovaWeb/Approve, NovaSoft is taking an important step in moving the industry towards a Java-based approach to delivering comprehensive EDM solutions that are essential for successful document management on an enterprise-wide basis," said Katherine Webster, marketing manager of Electronic Commerce Market Development at Sun Microsystems.

"By delivering comprehensive document and workflow management services capabilities based on Java, which is leveraged by the Netscape® ONE platform, NovaSoft is playing an important role in enabling the interoperability, performance and ongoing adaptability of global knowledge management applications," said Mark Coggins, director of Developer Relations at Netscape.

According to Rich Benack, Lucent Technologies project manager and member of technical staff, "We're very impressed with NovaWeb/Approve's features, and believe that this exciting new product puts NovaSoft in a very strategic position for delivering document and workflow management via the Web."

NovaWeb/Approve fully exploits the Web, the Java standard and Java's component architecture to form an exceptional foundation for strategic applications that must span organizations and continuously evolve and adapt to changing business requirements. The comprehensive new suite extends business-critical process and document management-centric applications, such as Engineering Change Orders (ECO), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Credit Risk Management to thousands of intranet and extranet users, at significantly lower costs, through centralized Web servers.

"With the release of NovaWeb/Approve, NovaSoft sets the stage for the direction in which workflow and document management are heading," said Carl Frappaolo executive vice president at The Delphi Group. "These technologies, leveraged in this manner, provide the foundation for virtual enterprises and the sharing of corporate knowledge across these enterprises. "

The NovaWeb Suite, the New Knowledgeflow Standard

Knowledge management is defined as the ability to manage and ensure the consistent adoption of both processes and information. Until now, knowledge management was largely the domain of MIS professionals rather than business managers, due to the complexity of these systems. In contrast, NovaWeb lets business managers easily keep pace with their constantly evolving organization and user base, because task definitions, workflows and time triggers are all easily developed and adapted without complex programming or required assistance from MIS.

NovaWeb/Approve, the first deliverable in the new NovaWeb family, is designed for knowledge workers who need to review and approve documents created by others via the workflow.

Features include document and folder manipulation, participation in workflows, document check-in/check-out, annotation, and review of workflow status in graphical or tabular form. It lets users work with popular browsers and any HTML editor to create or modify their Web pages.

"By delivering both the features, power and performance that growth-driven organizations need, and the sustainable ROI of Java and other key standards, NovaWeb/Approve lets organizations realize -- for the first time -- the real promise of Web-enabled strategic applications," concluded Bruce Cohen, president and CEO of NovaSoft.

Pricing and Availability

The NovaWeb family's pricing structure is "role-based." NovaWeb/Approve is available immediately and is priced at $700 - $900 per user, with quantity discounts available.
