Microware Teams Up With Corel For NC Applications

October 18, 1996

Microware Systems Corporation (Nasdaq: MWAR) and Corel Corporation (Nasdaq: COSFF) announced today that Corel has chosen Microware's OS-9(R) system software for use in their Java-based products. In a cross-licensing agreement, Microware will, in turn, license the Corel(R) Application Framework (CAF) and offer Corel(R) Office for Java(TM) software as part of a single-source software solution for customers.

This unique alliance between Corel, a leading developer of office tools and Microware, a premier system software developer, signals the beginning of a new era in software solutions for consumer electronics products. This single-source solution enables manufacturers of intelligent consumer electronics, such as personal digital assistants and network computers to incorporate cross-platform compatibility into low-cost Internet-enabled appliances.

"Microware's agreement with Corel represents a tremendous breakthrough for today's consumers," said Ken Kaplan, CEO of Microware. "This technology should allow virtually unlimited access for consumers to personal and professional data from the home, the office, or on the road -- to almost any one, any time, any where."

Michael Cowpland, President and CEO of Corel added, "Microware's OS-9 is a proven leader in the demanding arena of system software for consumer electronics. OS-9's reliability, modularity and overall performance make it the best software solution for our products and we are pleased to be teamed with Microware."

In a separate release, Corel announced a prebeta preview of Corel Office for Java, available for download from Corel's Java For Office Web site. The first-ever office application written in Java programming language includes Corel(R) WordPerfect(R) for Java, Corel(R) Quattro(R) Pro for Java, and Corel CHART(TM) for Java.
