Objectshare Announces New Java Components For Building UIs

October 16, 1996

ObjectShare, a division of ParcPlace-Digitalk, Inc. (Nasdaq: PARQ), today announced the availability of jKit/Grid, a set of advanced Java components that includes powerful grid, table and hierarchical list box user interfaces (UIs) for building highly polished Java applets and applications.

These extensible components, while closely integrated with ObjectShare's popular Parts for Java visual development environment, will also work with Java environments available from other leading market vendors such as Symantec, Sun and Borland.

"Our goal is to rapidly take a leadership position in the Java component market," said Richard Dym, vice president and general manager of ObjectShare.

"We intend to do this by offering a wide array of advanced tools and components that dramatically simplify Java development. By helping developers quickly gain a solid foothold in this exciting new market, we feel we have an excellent opportunity to act as a catalyst in the market for polished, production-quality Java applications and applets."

According to Eric Clayberg, ObjectShare's director of product development, "We expect jKit/Grid to hold great appeal for advanced programmers who want highly extensible Java components that automate key processes. Given jKit/Grid's model-view-controller architecture, developers can easily add their own extensions, or use custom extensions available from other third parties.

"Moreover, our jKit/Grid components have the unique ability to automatically react to data changes. This facility eliminates the need for manual intervention when changes to a table or grid are required, thus saving time and reducing errors in the resulting applications."

jKit/Grid provides exceptional power to advanced programmers. It is built on native Java classes and the Alternative Window Toolkit (AWT), ensuring portability to all platforms supported by Java as well as support for hierarchical data.

Several flexible data models in jKit/Grid map the two-dimensional view of the table to the programmer's specific domain object; this enables the programmer to design the underlying model without being constrained by the needs of the grid display.

jKit/Grid is available immediately electronically through ObjectShare's web site, and other vendors for $145 (standard version) or $495 (source code version). CD-ROM versions will be available from these same sources by the end of October. Evaluation copies of the software are also available immediately and can be downloaded free.

Electronic documentation is also included (in either HTML or Adobe Acrobat format).

ObjectShare is an independent division of ParcPlace-Digitalk (Nasdaq: PARQ), a leading provider of client/server/web tools. The division was formed in 1996 to provide developers in the Java market with best-of-breed object-oriented tools and a broad range of extensible software components. ObjectShare is located at 3160 De La Cruz Blvd., Santa Clara, CA 95054-2408. Tel.: 408/481-9090
