It's "All Over But The Crying" For Microsoft

August 3, 1996

David E. Smirk, President of Smirk Software, announced today that it's "all over but the crying" for Microsoft Corporation. "As Network Computers begin to fill store shelves you will see a significant decrease in the importance of proprietary operating systems. And as network bandwidth increases you'll see a proportional decrease in sales of individually installed programs. It is currently estimated that while processors are reaching their speed limits, bandwidth will quadruple every three years for the foreseeable future. This will enable "network" programs to eventually run faster than installed programs. With that in mind why would anyone want to install a program when they can use the latest version of any program on "the network" faster, easier, and cheaper?", said Mr. Smirk.

What about the cost of using "network programs"? At an estimated 25 cents per use a customer could use a "premium" program like MS Office, or Corel Office three times a day for three years before spending as much as actually buying the program. And basic programs for word processing, spreadsheets, mail, and artwork will be available on an unlimited use basis from the service provider. The customer never has to worry about bug fixes, upgrades, configuration problems, etc! It's great for the customer!

What about method of payment? There is no reason for the customer to have to deal with hundreds of different "content" providers and worry about method of payment, or "secured" transactions. The customer deals directly with his service provider who already has his "established" method of payment. The service provider deals directly with the "content" provider, or organized groups of content providers. Most service providers have been losing money for several years. This will enable them to provide a valuable service that produces significant income.

What about developers? Developers will no longer have to worry about who to write software for. Developers will be able to write programs, and put them on their server for use by anyone on the network! Instant income! No haggling with big corporations like Microsoft! No packaging problems! No distribution problems! No compatibility problems! And the income potential is enormous! If, for instance, a popular program was used 20 million times in a month it would generate $5,000,000.00 in income to be divided between the developer, and the service provider.

So, what about all this talk of Microsoft attempting to "take over" the Internet? "Just talk", says Mr. Smirk. In recent years Microsoft has become one of the worlds largest providers of propagandized "news" intended to "control" the development of computers. We are ALL "the network", and "the network IS the computer". Microsoft cannot buy us all, nor can they control us all! "One tip though", says Mr. Smirk. Avoid Internet Explorer like "the plague it is"! Internet Explorer is a desperate attempt on Microsoft's part to delay/control development of "the network", and will only result in a huge waste of everyone's time and money. After all, there is not anything that Microsoft can do that someone else can't do better!
