NEW YORK --- Wyse Technology, San Jose, Calif., will preview a new generation of its T2000 technology and Winterm thin client network computing device at PC Expo, booth #5101, Javits Center, New York, June 18-21. Code-named "Boogie Board," Wyse's new generation Winterm device will be the first thin client computing device to combine the recently announced JavaOS from Sun Microsystems for Internet applet execution with the ability to deliver traditional Microsoft Windows applications. Additionally, "Boogie Board" will feature embedded Web browser software. Shipments of "Boogie Board" will begin this summer.
Wyse also announced four new Winterm models designed for low-cost Internet access in home, school and public sector applications. The Winterm family members are highlighted by the striking "paperback book-sized" Model 2300 which can support a variety of displays for wall-mounting or free-standing on a desktop. Each new model features a point-to-point protocol (PPP) and internal/external modem capabilities for direct connection to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Web access. Winterm devices offering the PPP and modem capabilities are available now from Wyse. The devices are expected to be a boon to corporations with branch offices and telecommuters with pricing for the new Winterm product family starting at $500.
The addition of the PPP and modem capabilities allow remote employees to dial into an Internet-based corporate server or the World Wide Web via a local telephone call to an ISP. Previously, many remote access workers would be forced to dial directly into the corporation over long distance lines resulting in significant telephone charges. Employees connected to the home office for up to eight hours daily can now do so for roughly $1 per day versus up to $400 per day when dialing over normal long distance lines, based upon a monthly ISP subscription. Many Wyse corporate customers using Winterm are considering moving field office employees out of rented branch facilities and into the home to take advantage of this technology and further reduce overhead costs.
"BOOGIE BOARD" HIGHLIGHTS WYSE'S INTERNET STRATEGY
"Boogie Board" will take Wyse's Internet strategy one step further by affording direct connection to the Internet. A Web browser capability will be embedded in the "Boogie Board" firmware to facilitate easy Web surfing and the JavaOS will enable the utilization of Internet applets (small software applications written for the Internet). Wyse recently licensed the JavaOS, and "Boogie Board" will be the first member of the Winterm product family to utilize the new operating system from Sun Microsystems. Winterm devices have delivered Windows applications to the user since the product began shipping in January. No other thin client computing device in the industry provides capabilities for both operating systems.
Wyse is the only company to deliver on the promise of a $500 "thin client" Internet-capable device that works in the corporation as well as the home. Wyse's Winterm device enables users to utilize software residing on application servers located over the Internet and the extended Intranet. "T2000" is the "Terminal 2000" hardware/software technology developed by Wyse as the platform for advanced thin client products and the basis for the Winterm product line. This technology enables Wyse and its OEM customers to respond rapidly to market developments and was crucial to Wyse becoming the first company to reach market with a thin client device.
NC FUNCTIONALITY HERE TODAY
In addition to being the only provider of thin client devices capable of displaying Windows applications, Wyse is a recent adopter of the Network Computer (NC) Reference Profile and JavaOS, uniquely qualifying the company to develop a device which meets the specifications required by each of these technology standards.
"Since we began shipping our T2000-based Winterm product family nearly seven months ago, our hallmark has been providing the most complete functionality of any thin client offering in the market. We have integrated the functionality of the highly-touted NC of tomorrow in a device here today with 'Boogie Board'," said Jeff McNaught, Wyse's director and general manager of advanced platforms. "This is just the beginning of a robust, long-term Internet strategy for Wyse Technology designed to further our leadership in thin client computing."
The first generation Winterm models in Wyse's product line were officially introduced in November 1995 and quickly received a prestigious "Best of Comdex" award from BYTE Magazine. By endorsing the recently announced Network Computer Reference Profile and adopting the JavaOS, Wyse can further extend the reach of products based upon the T2000 platform into other markets which also require devices providing low cost, ease-of-use, ease-of-management, data security, technology independence and the ability to run a wide range of applications.
Wyse Technology is the world leader in thin client computing and leading supplier of advanced display technology. Wyse, which has sold nearly eight million thin client devices since its founding in 1981, is also a leading manufacturer of high resolution desktop monitors. Wyse's T2000 thin client platform devices are marketed under the Winterm name and are available through leading distributors and value-added resellers (VARs). Wyse's T2000 product line, general purpose video display terminals and monitors are also sold worldwide by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Headquartered in San Jose, Calif., Wyse has sales offices across the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.
