I want my VOD!
Part 1
Last week, we posted a link to an article in Wired News entitled From Silver Screen to PC Monitor. This article is about an Internet site (sightsound.com) that offers previews, and full-length movies 'on demand'. Well, needless to say, I think view on demand is an excellent concept.
My local cable company (Comcast) currently offers about 130 channels
through a General
Instrument DCT 2000 set-top, and yet it often seems that nothing is
on. The main reason is that while the set-top provides an interactive
TV Guide (provided by TV Guide),
it is nearly impossible to see what is on these 130 channels for the entire
day, week, or longer. And, assuming you do find the time and day
that a movie, or show, that you want to watch is on, obviously, you have
to watch it at that time, or, program your VCR to record it.
Wouldn't it be better if we could just choose what we want to watch,
and watch it? Wouldn't it be nice to be able to pause our program
when the phone rings, or dinner is ready? Wouldn't it be nice to
have the advantages of a VCR without the problems?
Problems? Yeah, like do you want to drive to the store every time you want to watch a show? Do you want to worry about when to take it back? Do you really want to own a whole bookshelf of big, clunky VCR tapes? We don't!
So, I jumped over to sightsound.com to check it out! What I found was:
