I have received many letters from people demanding that I apologize for opinionated columns I have written recently. Here is my apology:

In recent years I have watched several people who were very close to me die - slowly, and painfully.

I am sincerely sorry I didn't tell those people that what they were doing was wrong when I first believed it. Perhaps their lives could have been saved if I had been willing to risk their hating me.
